A quarter of the southern Polish city of Krakow is prone to flooding from the Vistula river.

The areas which would be affected have been mapped out by the city’s Crisis Management Office based on hydrographic reports dating back from the 1990s, claims Dziennik Polski.

Around 100,000 residents would be affected by any flooding, around one eighth of the city’s population.

Objects of strategic importance are also in the flooding danger zone, including a thermal-electric power plant in Krakow’s Łęg district and two sewage plants.

Other places that would find themselves under water are 20 industrial plants, 20 churches, 11 museums, 4 theatres, 6 hospitals, around 100 schools and 5 higher education facilities. The paper concludes that most residents living in such zones do not even know about the dangers that may arise if flooding happened in their area. (jb)
