A neurosurgeon from the northern city of Bydgosz is using electrode implants as a pioneering method of curing depression.
Professor Marek Harlat from the military clinical hospital in Bydgoszcz has performed a second successful surgery using electrode implants developed by American researchers.
The method is used in severely depressed patients who are resistant to standard types of treatment such as psychotherapy or antidepressants. It involves brain stimulation to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter which plays a significant role in regulating mood.
Both patients operated on by Professor Harlat, who suffered from depression for several years, showed promising results.
The man who was depressed for 26 years is in a much better condition although he still shows symptoms of depression. The other patient no longer has suicidal tendencies.
The surgery is rather expensive, hiwever. A stimulator itself costs almost 9,000 euro and the national Health Fund does not cover the cost of it. (mg)
