• Gambling protests in Warsaw
  • 19.11.2009

Over 150 gambling industry members have staged a protest in Warsaw to object a new gambling bill, currently being debated in parliament.

The protesters first gathered at the Parliament House, where the bill will be voted on this evening, and later headed to the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. They called for abandoning the bill and adopting a different project that would ensure their jobs.

According to new regulations on gambling, bookies will have to pay 50-per cent tax, instead of 10-per cent, and one-armed bandits will be allowed only in casinos. Gambling entrepreneurs fear that the increased tax will bring the industry to an end.

The lower house of parliament will vote on the bill on Friday. (mg/mmj)
