• Patch Adams in northern Poland

Hunter Adams, known famously as Doctor Patch – one of the most famous physicians in the world – paid a visit to the northwestern city of Bydgoszcz today.

The medical doctor, social activist, and professional clown, known for red noses, came at the invitation of city authorities, the Kazimierz Wielki University and the local Addiction Treatment and Rehabilitation Center.

“It is my aim to make love the biggest virtue for people rather than money or power – otherwise we will become extinct,” said the doctor in Bydgoszcz.

Doctor Patch has made it his mission in life to bring healing laughter to young patients. Patch Adams met with volunteers of the local Dr Clown Foundation, and the university’s volunteer center and delivered a lecture, where he stated that joy and love is not therapy but a part of our lives.

“I have been a member of the Dr. Clown Foundation for a year, I’m in my fifth year at Kazimierz Wielki University. On our visits, when we come in, we see sad children, and they begin to smile as soon as we take out our red noses. I am sure that what we do has a good impact on the children,” said one volunteer.

During the visit, Doctor Clown visited children treated at local medical facilities, including the university’s hematology and oncology hospital in Bydgoszcz.

The pioneer of healing-through-laughter was made famous by the film Patch Adams where he was portrayed by the American comedian Robin Williams. (ab/mmj)
