President of Pekao S.A. bank Jan Krzysztof Bielecki, has resigned from the office in what may be the first step to becoming Poland’s prime minister.
“It’s Mr Bielecki’s private decision and it’s hard to say whether he intends to get involved in politics,” Pawel Gras, government’s spokesman, told Polish Radio. “Civic Platform will gladly take under its roof people those who have a leading position in Poland and Jan Krzysztof Bielecki is certainly one of them,” added Gras.
Bielecki (right) - a former prime minister of Poland - did not give reasons why he decided to resign from the post of the president of Pekao S.A.
Jan Krzysztof Bielecki is a centre-right politician, a co-founder of Civic Platform. In 1991, Bielecki served as Prime Minister, then represented Poland at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Since 2003 he has served as president of Pekao S.A.
It is being speculated that Bielecki could take over the position as head of the government if Donald Tusk successfully runs for the presidency in elections next year.
The government’s spokesman admitted that Prime Minister Tusk considers Jan Krzysztof Bielecki his close friend and rates his advice highly.
“However, it does not mean that Tusk implements Bielecki’s political ideas,” said Gras hinting at media speculation that Bielecki masterminded the recent changes in the government - following the recent resignations from cabinet after the accusations that government ministers were lobbying on behalf of the betting industry – and suggested who should replace Interior, Justice and Sports Ministers.
