An opposition Law and Justice MP wants all people using tanning beds to be registered at the National Health Fund and be deprived of certain medical services.
Waldemar Andzel has waged a war against unhealthy tans. The MP wants Poles who willingly expose themselves to ultra violate radiation - which the World Health Organization says can cause skin cancer, cataracts and premature skin aging – to be deprived of treatment from the state National Health Fund if they get skin cancer.
The idea will not be easy to implement, admits Andzel, because a computer network, which would connect up all solariums, would be necessary.
Additionally, the MP wants all solariums to place a notice on tanning beds about the health hazard that they pose, similar to warnings that appear on cigarette packages.
The Health Ministry is not keen on the idea, explaining that first someone would have to prove that UV radiation is harmful, which is not so easy. And even some of the MPs Law and Justice colleagues are skeptical of the move. (mg/pg)
