• Mayor goes after “libelous” internet users
  • 30.11.2009

The mayor of the north-western city of Szczecin is pursuing internet users who called him a “half-wit” on an internet forum.

Mayor Piotr Krzystek has informed the Prosecutor’s Office in Szczecin about alleged criminal offences committed by internet users, who anonymously offended him. The internet users called the mayor a “liar”, “thief” and “half-wit”, commenting on his allegedly unlawful seizure of property.

Investigators have already disclosed at least thirty people who were involved in the alleged group libel. Although their identity should be known only to the Prosecutor’s Office, the internet users claim that the city hall has a list with their names on it.

The suspects also complain that since the “libel scandal” was revealed, they have been persecuted at work. A person going under the name of  Exman, who works for a public company, has been reprimanded by his employee and a person nick-named Rewers10, who works in an institution dependent on the city hall, was the only one who has not received a bonus this year.

When the identity of the internet users is revealed, the mayor of Szczecin intends to take all of them to court. (mg)
