• Poland has too many universities

Cut down the number of universities and make students contribute to the cost of education, says Barbara Kudrycka, minister of science and higher education.

The government believes that there are too many higher education establishments in Poland, according to Barbara Kudrycka, as the government continues to look at a radical shake up in higher education.

“If you compare the number of students to the number of universities then we come to the conclusion that there is too much higher education in Poland,” Professor Kudrycka tells TVP. “We expect a consolidation between public and private universities,” she said.

The minister also said that they government was looking at ways in which students can contribute to the cost of study in a sector crying out for more funding.

“We want to invest in the best students, the best research centres, the best professors.”

The minister welcomed proposals muted yesterday by the Polish Rectors Fund for students to co-finance their education. “Science and higher education in Poland are underfinanced,” said Professor Jerzy Woznicki, head of the Polish Rectors Fund, suggesting that learners contribute to 25 percent of the costs of study, financed by student loans.
