• Civic Platform doesn't need coalition?
  • 09.12.2009
Only three parties – Civic Platform, the Law and Justice party and the Democratic Left Alliance – would get enough votes to enter parliament, if parliamentary elections were hold this week, shows a survey by Gfk Polonia.

The Polish Peasant’s Party (PSL), Civic Platform’s coalition partner, would not take any seats in parliament, according to the public opinion poll.

The ruling Civic Platform (PO) is still on the lead despite recent corruption scandals, allegedly involving party members. According to the survey, PO would take 50 per cent of votes, which would account for 256 seats. It is ten seats more than the whole acting PO-PSL coalition actually managed to get.

If the trend continuous, Civic Platform might be able to rule on its own after 2011 elections, especially that its coalition partner might not go beyond the threshold of five per cent.

The opposition Law and Justice party would gain 30 per cent of votes, and 154 seats, and the Democratic Left Alliance 9 per cent of votes and 48 seats. Two seats would go to the representatives of German minority, as guaranteed by the Constitution.

The survey was conducted between 3-8 December over a representative sample of 985 people. (mg/mmj)
