• Kaczynski’s four years in office
  • 22.12.2009

Emphasizing energy security, national memory as well as public finances - these, according to the head of the Presidential Chancellery Władysław Stasiak are the main successes of four years of President Lech Kaczynski in office.

Speaking on the eve of the anniversary when Kaczynski entered the Presidential Palace, Minister Stasiak expressed hope there will be many more occasions to evaluate the presidency.

December 23 marks four years since Lech Kaczynski was sworn in as the President of Poland. He defeated Civic Platform’s candidate, Donald Tusk in the second round run-off.

According to Minister Stasiak, there have been many positive events during the current presidential term during which Kaczynski has clearly expressed Polish interests on the international arena and lobbied for the country’s strong position in Europe. There were also challenges, said Minister Stasiak but declined to elaborate.

President Kaczynski’s term can be split into two phases – the first when his brother, Jaroslaw was prime minister and the second when a difficult cohabitation began after Prime Minister Donald Tusk came to power after Civic Platform won the general election two years ago. A latter period has been characterized by the struggle for power over foreign policy and President Kaczynski regularly blocking legislation via the power of veto. (di/pg)
