Thirty six people died on the roads in Poland over the Christmas period, with 338 injured in 251 accidents.

During the holidays the police stopped 950 motorists for drunk driving, however.

Police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski says that the figures are lower than last year but fears that a second wave of those returning home after visiting family could raise the fatality statistics still further.

Ten thousand police officers were involved in patrolling the roads over Christmas. (pg)
