Police in Wroclaw, south-west Poland, caught and arrested a 29-year old red-handed as the assailant was stealing wing-mirrors and windscreen wipers from parked cars in the centre of the Lower Silesian city.

Upon further investigation, police managed to link the man to other crimes he had committed. Pawel Petrykowski told PAP, the Polish News Agency, that the man “[was proven] to be the perpetrator of four muggings, including two on bystanders and two in retail stores”.

According to Wrocław police, the 29-year old used a syringe infected with HIV to threaten his culprits before getting away with stealing money, a mobile telephone and a laptop computer.

The man has been taken into custody for three months, and could be sentenced to 15 years if found guilty of the crimes. (jb)
