• New conservative party to compete with Law and Justice?
  • 06.01.2010

Politicians closely related to ultra-conservative Radio Maryja, owned by the controversial Father Rydzyk, have established a political party.

The right-wing party, called Wspolnota Malych Ojczyzn – which the party suggested to tbenews.pl should be translated as “The Community of Little Homelands), wants to unite local communities within the country and build a strong Polish identity.

The leader of the party is Maciej Eckardt, who was the deputy governor of the Pomeranian region, northern Poland until last month. Eckardt has cooperated in the past with the Catholic-nationalist  League of Polish Families and the Law and Justice party.

The new party is based in the northern city of Torun, where Radio Maryja and the University of Social and Medial Culture established by media-mogul Father Tadeusz Rydzyk, are also located. In the coming municipal elections, the party can count on Rydzyk’s supporters, say observers, who normally form a part of the Law and Justice electorate. The party’s leader also considers cooperation with the main opposition party. (mg)
