• Cimoszewicz supports Tusk in presidential election bid

Former foreign minister and ex-member of the communist party Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz has given his support to Prime Minister Donald Tusk in this year’s presidential election.

“He seems to be the most serious candidate for the post,” said Cimoszewicz, who repeated that he did not want to run for the job himself in September despite good popularity ratings in opinion polls.

Cimoszewicz said Tusk is the only candidate who could prevent the incumbent, Lech Kaczynski getting re-elected. Opinion polls regularly show that Tusk and Kaczynski would go into a second round run-off after being the two most popular candidates in the first round.

Cimoszewicz’s public support of PM Tusk will disappoint his old party, the Democratic Left Alliance, who were hoping he would put his weight behind their candidate, Jerzy Szmajdzinski. “I wish him all the best, but opinion polls are not favourable for him,” Cimoszewicz told RMF radio. (mg/pg)
