• Roads OK, rail travel difficult

Despite difficult weather conditions and heavy snow Poland’s main road network remains passable.

According to the General Directorate for National Roads and Highways, traffic may be hampered by mud and slush and snow thaws. Drivers travelling in south-eastern Poland are faced with the biggest problems, says Anna Jarosiewicz from the General Directorate:

"The conditions are most favourable in the southern Opole and central Wielkopolskie provinces where the roads are completely clear. The situation is worst, however, in the south eastern Podkarpacie province where the roads are covered with mud and a thin layer of snow. In the rest of Poland, most roads are clear, with mud remaining on some sections," she told Polskie Radio.

Meanwhile, the winter continues to impede rail traffic across Poland, mostly in the southern provinces. Frost and snow have caused damage to the rail network, while fallen trees block the rail lines. Many trains are several hours behind schedule.

Yet weather forecasts indicate that passengers may still face longer delays as heavy snowfall and ice may cause disruptions on routes in the areas of Krakow, Częstochowa, Opole, and Wrocław, dispersed across the southern parts of the country, and the central city of Poznań. (ab)
