Mayor of the Silesian town of Swietochlowice, southern Poland, has been detained on corruption charges.
Eugeniusz M. has been arrested in the morning by officers from the Internal Security Agency (ABW) and is now being interrogated. The mayor’s flat and office have been searched.
Eugeniusz M. and his secretary Joanna S.-K. are accused of taking and offering bribes. The Prosecutor’s Office in Bytom has not revealed, however, how high the bribes were. Both detained may face up to eight years in prison.
The investigation on corruption at Swietochlowice town hall has been on since November 2009. (mg)
