• Warsaw airport gets top security robots
  • 22.01.2010

State-of-the-art equipment used for destroying explosive materials and detecting illegal drugs has been installed at the Frederic Chopin International Airport in Warsaw.

The advanced technology used in the new equipment allows quicker and more precise specification of a luggage content - says Mariusz Piętka from the local branch of the border guards

It is a portable X-ray machine to scan unattended luggage. Also it has a pyrotechnic ejector which could be installed on the robot. There are also radio communication devices with parameters which prevent potential terrorists or bombers from using this radio frequency,” he told Polskie Radio.

Customs officers from Warsaw Airport are also the first in the world to receive a special detector able to detect  or ‘sniff out’ narcotics. The portable device weighs twelve kilograms and along with the remaining equipment was purchased by the regional authorities.

Last year border guards at Frederic Chopin International Airport had to intervene in 160 cases of luggage left unattended, which included 4 emergency evacuations.

During that period they detected 55 kg of narcotics worth 6 million zloty and confiscated 19 tons of tobacco worth over 3 mln zloty (1 million dollars). (di)
