• Olewnik’s remains exhumed

At 04.00 CET this morning the body of Krzysztof Olewnik was exhumed in the latest bizarre twist in a murder investigation that still begs more questions than answers.

 

The exhumation was carried out at the behest of the Gdnask prosecutors office which has found earlier identification of the body of the murdered businessman’s son not reliable.

 

The body is being taken from the earth under guard from the police and behind closed gates.

Krzysztof Olewnik was kidnapped in October 2001. In July 2003, the kidnappers claimed 300,000 euros in ransom. A month after receiving the money Krzysztof was nevertheless murdered.. His body was found in October 2006, buried in a forest in Rozan, northern Poland. The area was identified to the police by one of the murders, Slawomir Kościuk,

However, in 2007, the Olsztyn Regional Prosecutor's Office, after re-opening the case uncovered a series of irregularities or negligence committed in the course of the investigation. There were even doubts to the correctness of the identification of the corpse.

On March 31, 2008 10 defendants were sentenced with charges connected with the murder of Krzysztof Olewnik. Three have since committed suicide. (pg)
