President Lech Kaczynski has appealed to Poles to take part in a special SMS charity action to aid the earthquake victims in Haiti

The head of state, accompanied by the First Lady, appeared in a TV clip promoting the campaign. It has also been posted on the president’s official website.

“The government and I, as the president of Poland, are doing our best to extend assistance. But I’m sincerely asking all my compatriots to help as well. Every penny can make a difference. Haiti is in need of international solidarity for seldom such extreme tragedies occur,” said the Polish head of state.

The presidential couple is thus supporting the humanitarian aid campaign of Caritas Polska. The church organization has  so far collected over 8 tons of food and medicines which were already sent to Haiti on board a government plane. Presently, Caritas is preparing a program under the motto “Long distance adoption”. Its aim is to provide necessary funding for feeding and supporting the education of children who have been orphaned in the disaster.  (ss)
