Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz from Civic Platform, Wojciech Olejniczak from the Democratic Left Alliance and Władysław Stasiak from the Law and Justice party will run for the post of the mayor of Warsaw.
Current mayor of Warsaw Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, the former chair of the National bank of Poland, has a good chance to be re-elected in this year’s local elections, opinion polls show.
So the opposition Law and Justice party have decided to put up a prominent candidate in the shape of Wladyslaw Stasiak, currently chief of President Lech Kaczynski’s office.
A survey conducted among the Law and Justice MPs showed that Stasiak is thought to be able to gain more votes in the November election than his party colleagues Elzbieta Jakubiak, Pawel Poncyliusz and Mariusz Blaszczak.
Wladyslaw Stasiak used to be the deputy mayor of Warsaw while the capital city was ruled by the then Mayor Lech Kaczynski. “Stasiak is a serious rival,” admits Gronkiewicz-Waltz.
The Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) has also chosen a high-profile candidate for the post of mayor of Warsaw. Wojciech Olejniczak, former leader of the party and currently an MEP, wants to modernize Warsaw and create new work places. Olejniczak assures that his experience from Brussels and other European capitals will help achieve the goal. (mg)
