The Defence Ministry is going to shut down every third Military Draft Office in the country, as a result of the professionalisation of the Polish Army.
There are 123 Military draft Offices in Poland. Thirty-seven of them will be closed down, including three in Warsaw, Krakow, Poznan and Wroclaw and two in Gdansk, Lublin and Lodz.
Since compulsory military service was abolished in Poland in January 2010, Military Draft Offices are no longer necessary for recruiting soldiers. From now on they will only register men who will serve in the Polish Army in case of war and recruit people for the National Reserve Forces.
The Defence Ministry estimates that around 660 civil Military Draft Offices’ employees will be made redundant but the restructuring will bring 82 million zloty (20.5 million euro) savings in two years. (mg/jb)
