In October 2009, prosecutors from Gdansk discovered a series of irregularities related to the autopsy of Krzysztof Olewnik.
Prosecutors interrogated six employees of a criminal laboratory in the northern city of Olsztyn, who performed Krzysztof Olewnik’s autopsy. They testified that the head of the laboratory, Jolanta L.-B., coerced them into give false evidence. Some of them claimed that they were threatened by her.
When the prosecutors from Gdansk wanted to look into original documents of Olewnik’s DNA tests, it turned out that the documentation was incomplete. Besides, the prosecutors discovered that autopsy was not performed properly, samples were swapped, unauthorized people had access to the body, and parts of bones were missing.
Krzysztof Olewnik, the son of a millionaire businessman was abducted in October 2001 and ransom was demanded for his release. In July 2003, the abductors were given 300,000 euro ransom but Krzysztof Olewnik was not released. His body was later found and the post-mortem concluded that he was tortured and brutally murdered a month after the kidnappers received the money.
The three men convicted in Olewnik’s case later committed suicide in prison. A parliamentary commission investigating the abduction and murder is now underway. (mg/mmj)
