The upper house of Polish Parliament, the Senate, is to vote today on the Polish-American Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA).

The lower house, the Sejm, adopted the document last Friday.

According to the deal, the US will be able to station troops in Poland in the future as part of an upgrade of NATO air defences in Europe. The document also paves  the way for the deployment of Patriot missiles in Poland.

Additionally, SOFA includes provisions for American troops to pay taxes in Poland and, if any crimes are committed outside the base, then they would come to be under the jurisdiction of Polish law. SOFA was signed on ministry level in December, following 15 months of talks. (di/mmj)
