Former president Lech Wałęsa has expressed his support for Bronisław Komorowski (right) in his race for the presidential primary election of the Civic Platform.
During a meeting of the two men in Gdańsk, northern Poland, Tuesday, Wałęsa said Komorowski’s rival Radosław Sikorski, aged 47, is too young for the post.
Sikorski and Komorowski have emerged as the top two choices to represent Civic Platform in autumn elections after the overwhelming favourite, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, said he would not be standing.
In an opinion poll by Gfk Polonia, Komorowski emerges as a favourite candidate with voters, with 26 percent saying they would support him in the first round of voting, eleven points ahead of President Lech Kaczynski.
Komorowski was in Gdańsk to discuss the preparations for the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Solidarity, a movement that led to the fall of communism in Poland. The main ceremony commemorating the event will be held at the Gdańsk shipyard, the cradle of Solidarity.
Meanwhile, Civic Platform continues to gain support in the country, according to a poll by PBS DGA, with the party gaining 10 percentage points in the last two weeks.
Fifty eight percent of those polled said they would vote for Civic Platform in a general election, giving it an absolute majority in the lower house of parliament, the Sejm.
Law and Justice, currently the largest opposition party in parliament would receive 25 percent, says the poll.
