• PSL to declare presidential candidate ‘end of March’
  • 02.03.2010

The junior coalition partner, the Polish Peasant’s Party (PSL) will present its candidate for this year’s presidential elections at the end of the month, says Waldemar Pawlak.

The deputy prime minister said that the candidate will be from the political mainstream who will change the “"procession of confrontation, aggression and adventurism in [Polish] politics."

Pawlak also refused to rule out the possibility that Poles will get, what has been, historically, an unusual choice for voters - a woman on the ballot paper. The most probable choice, therefore, appears to be current deputy speaker in the lower house of parliament, Ewa Kierzkowska.

The deputy prime minister and PSL’s most prominent politician for some years said he does not himself intend to run in the elections, scheduled for this autumn, although “various options are being considered”. (pg)
