• Pres Kaczynski cancels appointments

President Lech Kaczynski has cancelled his visit to Budapest for tomorrow’s celebrations of Polish Day on news his mother’s condition in hospital has worsened still further.

He will be represented by Mariusz Handzlik, a minister in the presidential chancellery.

A visit by the Serbian President Boris Tadic, scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed.

The changes in the Polish President’s programme of official engagements have been prompted by the serious condition of his mother. Eighty three year-old Jadwiga Kaczynska is in intensive care at Warsaw’s Military Medical Institute.

The president’s twin brother, Jaroslaw – leader of the Law and Justice party -  has also cut back his schedule and was not present for PM Donald Tusk’s summing up of two and a half years in office in parliament last Friday. (mk/pg)
