Spying on a couple of falcons nesting on the 45th floor of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, via webcam, has created a flutter among Polish nature enthusiasts.

On Thursday morning over 150 bird enthusiasts were viewing a female called Sawa and her mate Wars as well as their newly hatched baby, thanks to webcams transmitting this nature show on the internet.

The newborn broke the shell of its egg on Tuesday. There are three more eggs in the nest, so there may well be more hatching soon. Sawa is busy sitting on the eggs. Last year there were four in the nest but the couple eventually brought up only one young falcon.

Wars and Sawa (named after legendary founders of Warsaw) are peregrine falcons. These birds became extinct here in the 1960s and were re-introduced in Warsaw in 1996.

The Association for Wild Animals built the nest for them, which has been used ever since. Since 2000, a total of 17 falcons were hatched in Warsaw.

Keep up to date with the domestic arrangements of the two love birds here. (kk/pg)
