• More candidates for the presidential elections
  • 25.04.2010

Tomorrow is the deadline for would-be candidates in the presidential elections to submit their names to the National Electoral Commission, after gathering the signatures of 1, 000 voters and creating an official campaign committee of the least 15 members.

Waldemar Pawlak, leader of the Polish Peasant Party, is the only candidate representing parliamentary parties who has already submitted his name to the commission. The other ones include Konrad Morawiecki of 'Fighting Solidarity' and Andrzej Lepper of Farmers' Self-Defence.

The speaker of Parliament and acting President Bronislaw Komorowski will run for the presidency as the candidate of the ruling Civic Platform. The main opposition party, the conservative Law and Justice, is to announce the name of its candidate tomorrow. According to most observers, it will be  Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the twin brother of the late President Lech Kaczynski.

As the next stage of the campaign, all the committees have to submit 100, 000 voter signatures by May 6. The presidential election will be held on 20 June.

If none of the candidates receives over 50 percent of the vote, the two frontrunners will compete in a second round on July 4. (mk)
