  • 27.04.2010

In an opinion poll taken after Jaroslaw Kaczynski formally announced his candidature for June’s presidential election, the former prime minister trails Civic Platform’s Bronislaw Komorowski in a second round head-to-head 35 to 57 percent, according to SMG/KRC pollsters.

When pitted against the full range of candidates declaring they would stand in the first round of the election, then acting president Komorowski would receive 47 percent of the vote, Jaroslaw Kaczynski 27 percent, SLD leader Grzegorz Napieralski 5 percent, Waldemar Pawlak (PSL) 4 percent, independent Andrzej Olechowski 3 percent, Andrzej Lepper (Self defence) 2 percent, Marek Jurek (Polish Right) 1 percent.

Seven percent said they had yet to make up their mind which candidate to vote for. Seventy seven percent said they would participate in the elections, a high turnout by Polish standards.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski declared he would stand in the elections starting on June 20 on Monday afternoon, shortly before the deadline imposed by the National Election Commission. The election has been brought forward from the autumn after the death of President Lech Kaczynski in the Smolensk air disaster of April 10.

The survey by MillwardBrown SMG / KRC was taken on April 26 from a nationwide representative sample of 1,001. (pg)
