A piece of Tu-154, which crashed near Smolensk killing 96 people will be incorporated into the Black Madonna of Czestochowa, Poland’s holiest icon.
A small piece of the presidential plane’s wing has been denoted to the Jasna Gora monastery in southern Poland by the citizens of Smolensk, where the tragedy happened. “This mute, little witness of a huge tragedy will be a symbol of our care for the motherland,” says Father Roman Majewski, the monastery’s prior.
The piece will be incorporated into the Black Madonna’s new robes, which are designed and made by Mariusz Drapikowski, an amber artisan from the coastal city of Gdansk. The new robes and crowns will be the Polish nation’s gift to the Black Madonna for the 100 the anniversary of the holy icon’s coronation. Apart from a piece of Tu-154 wing, the robes and crowns will also include meteors from the Moon, Mars and Mercury certified by NASA.
The Black Madonna of Czestochowa is a holy icon of the Virgin Mary that is both Poland’s holiest relic and one of the country’s national symbols. Many Poles make pilgrimages to the Jasna Gora monastery, where the icon is held, to pray to the Black Madonna. (mg)
