• Law and Justice demands Smolensk investigation takeover
  • 06.05.2010

Law and Justice wants Russian authorities to hand over their investigation of the Smolensk crash to prosecutors in Poland.

The Law and Justice (PiS) parliamentary club has handed over a resolution to Speaker and acting president Bronislaw Komorowski to be be considered by the Sejm lower house.

The document appeals to the Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, to ask Russian authorities formally for the transferral of investigations to a Polish-led commission.

The move to pass such a resolution comes after doubts over the competence of Russian authorities as to the way in which the investigation is being led, with reference to the Chicago Convention origianlly passed 1944, which stipulates on who runs investigations in the case of an aviation catastrophe.

As one if its reasons, PiS believes that as the site of the crash is not properly guarded, there is a risk of the loss of evidence in the ongoing case as to why the presidential Tu-154 crashed.

After intervention from the Polish Embassy in Moscow, Russian police are now guarding the site of the crash, which killed President Lech Kaczynski and 95 others on April 10. (jb)
