• Save the porpoise!
  • 16.05.2010

The International Day of Baltic Porpoises is celebrated in the coastal city of Gdynia.

These sea mammals are an endangered species and are under protection. According to experts, one of the major threats the animals face is accidental entangling into fish nets.

Krzysztof Skora, the head of the Maritime Station in the Hel Peninsula says the Porpoise Day is an excellent opportunity to raise the awareness of people that such animals exist. ‘People are rather more acquainted with guinea pig than with the porpoise, and we have to make them understand  how important it is to take care of these animals‘.

Adult harbour porpoises are 180 cm long. The harbour porpoise are also incorrectly called "the dolphin of the Baltic". (ab)
