A 59 year old man in Tarnobrzeg and a 63 year old man near the town of Zywiec Juszczyna, Silesia, became the latest victims of flooding, as the flood wave moved into central Poland overnight.

Warsaw is preparing for a flood wave which will reach up to 750 cm by Friday afternoon, informed the Metrological Institute. Though slightly lower than originally forecast this is still the highest level of water seen on the Vistula river in the capital since WW II.

On Friday morning water levels were recorded at 719 cm. The most vulnerable areas are on the east bank near the fashionable district of Seska Kepa and north towards Warsaw Zoo.

The highest level of water ever recorded in the capital was back in 1844 when 852 cm was measured. Seven people have died and millions of zloty worth of damages has been caused by flood water since heavy rains swept through southern Poland last weekend.

Residents in Pulawy, around 100 kilometres south of Warsaw, are refusing to evacuate areas threatened by rising water, say fire fighters. Farms have been flooded in a region without flood banks on the rivers.

Forecasts predict that high levels of water will be seen in central Poland for the next three days.(pg)
