Flood prevention in the upper reaches of the Vistula will take 10-15 years and cost 13 billion zloty, according to the interior ministry.
The flood prevention programme, which has been worked on since 2007, is to be passed onto other ministries in June.
“The most important elements in flood defence in this area are retention pools, with one being constructed in Swinna Poreba on the Vistula, as well another existing one in Katy Myscowa on the Wisloka [a Vistula tributary],” says the plan’s mastermind, Professor Janusz Zaleski in Dziennik Gazeta Prawna.
Apart from many other smaller retention pools, the programme envisages the strengthening of flood dykes in many cities, including Krakow, Katowice, Kielce, Rzeszow and Tarnow.
The expert believes that the flood prevention programme in the upper reaches of Poland’s longest river will secure its safety for its entire length. (jb)
