• Soldiers to have their own ombudsman
  • 01.06.2010

MPs have forwarded a draft on appointing a soldiers’ ombudsman to the Parliament.

The role of the soldiers’ ombudsman would be to protect the rights of both active soldiers and retired army men. Soldiers would be able to petition the ombudsman directly, bypassing the chain of command.

Marek Borowski leader of the Social Democracy of Poland and the former deputy PM Ludwik Dorn, who came up with the idea, claim that the new institution is necessary because the Ombudsman does not represent soldiers’ interests properly.

The institution of a soldiers’ ombudsman exists in Canada and the U.S. as well as Germany, Great Britain and Sweden. (mg)
