Nurseries, schools and other public buildings in Warsaw near the Wistula river will close tomorrow as a precaution against rising water levels.

The Wał Miedzeszyński thoroughfare, which runs alongside the right hand bank of the river in the capital, will also be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday as areas of Poland continue to be threatened by flooding.

Early Monday morning water levels on the Vistula river in the capital reached 630 cms, just 20 cms below emergency levels.

“The flood wave is expected to reach its peak on Tuesday afternoon,” said president of Warsaw, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz. She added, however, that the level is expected to be 20 cms lower than the previous wave which hit the capital in late May.

In Sandomierz, south-east Poland, over the weekend, the River Vistula broke through flood defences that had been erected after the first wave of floods two weeks ago.

Many areas of city are again under water, with evacuations being announced over loudspeakers. Many residents who had come back to their homes after the first wave of floods are refusing to leave their homes.

The Sandomierz glass factory also been inundated for the second time, bringing production to a standstill. (pg/jb)
