• Violent storm ravages northern Poland
  • 11.06.2010

A violent storm with high winds left fallen trees, broken power lines, smashed up cars and damaged buildings in its wake in several towns near the north-western city of Szczecin.

The most affected by the storm were Gryfino, Walcz, Lobez and Swidwin. The storm, which hit Gryfino at 18 CET left 3,000 people without electricity.

“Eleven cars and a kebab booth were destroyed as a result of the thunderstorm. Fortunately, there were no casualties,” said Jacenty Skwarzynski, head of the Crisis Management Centre in Gryfino.

Firemen and city guards are removing fallen trees from the streets. “We’ve already started estimating the losses,” said the mayor of Gryfino Henryk Pilat.

Violent storms and heavy rain and hail also affected other towns. “In Walcz and Lobez many basements were flooded and trees fell down. In Swidwin strong wind, which reached 100 km/h broke power lines,” said Marek Michalak from the Fire Service in Szczecin. (mg)
