The southern city of Cieszyn is observing the 1200 anniversary of receiving its city rights charter.
To mark the occasion a special ecumenical mass has been celebrated on castle hill. Father Jozef Budniok of the local Catholic parish says Cieszyn is proud to be a symbol linking different cultures and religions.
The city has for centuries sheltered various minority groups subjected to persecution by rulers on both sides of the Polish-Czech border, where the town is located.
Also on Sunday, the annual Cieszyn prize, named after the late writer and journalist Melchior Wankowicz, for outstanding merit in education, is being presented. This year’s recipient is Professor Idzi Panic, a noted historian from the University of Silesia specializing in the Middle Ages.
Another birthday in Chorzow
Meanwhile, the famous Park of Culture and Recreation in Chorzow, Silesia is celebrating 60 years of existence.
Over the decades its amusement park and ZOO as well as mountain cable cars and narrow gauge rail routes have been a major attraction for the youngest and senior residents of this Silesian city and visitors from all over Poland.
On Sunday, the Park of Culture and Recreation in Chorzow has organized special jubilee concerts, outdoor theatre performances and a fair of regional crafts.
