Sixty-seven volumes of documents on the 1940 Katyn massacre are being handed over to the Institute of National Remembrance today.
Acting president Bronislaw Komorowski, who received the files from Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev on 8 May, will pass them on to the IPN during an official ceremony in Belvedere.
The documents were gathered by Russian military prosecutors who held an investigation into the Katyn massacre between 1990 and 2004. Among the documents are files completely unknown to Polish researchers, including testimonies of three guards at Starobielsk camp.
The Russian Military Prosecutor's Office collected 183 volumes of files on the Katyn massacre. As many as 116 volumes came under security classification and the crime was classified as an ordinary one, which means that the high officers of the secret NKVD police exceeded the powers.
President Medvedev assured in May that Russia will continue disclosing materials on the Katyn massacre. (mg)
