In the last but one day of campaigning ahead of Sunday’s presidential election first round Civic Platform’s candidate Bronislaw Komorowski has paid a tribute to the late president Lech Kaczynski in Krakow.
Komorowski visited the last resting place of Lech Kaczynski at Wawel castle, who died in Smolensk on April 10, to pay his respects ahead of elections on Sunday to find the late president’s replacement.
During his visit to the historical city of Krakow in southern Poland Bronislaw Komorowski first met Pope John Paul II’s secretary Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz and then laid flowers at Lech and Maria Kaczynskis tomb at Wawel. He also met with the Nobel Prize winner Wislawa Szymborska.
Komorowski also visited the south-eastern city of Rzeszow, where he decorated firemen who fought against the recent floods and announced that all rescue workers from areas affected will receive financial rewards.
Five percent lead
Meanwhile, a survey by TNS OBOP shows that Bronislaw Komorowski can count on 42 percent of votes in the first round of the presidential election on Sunday, while his main rival, Jaroslaw Kaczynski is on 35 percent. According to the poll, Komorowski has gained 4 percentage points over the last week and Kaczynski has lost one percentage point.
In the second round Komorowski is likely to receive 59 percent of votes and Kaczynski 41 percent, according to the poll conducted on 15-16 June among a sample of 1,000. (mg)
