Police in the Baltic city of Gdansk took two men into custody, Thursday, after they blew up a cashpoint and tried to get away with the cash.
The two men, who have not been publicly identified, blew off the cover to the cashpoint before trying to escape.
“One of the men started to run away on foot, but was taken down to the ground by law enforcement officers soon after,” a spokesman for the police, Mariusz Sokolowski told the press.
“The second man jumped into a car and started to drive away,” Sokolowski continued, adding that “[the thief] ran over four policemen and a support officer who was lying on the ground.”
The getaway fell short of success after police reverted to opening fire on the car, firing a “few shots” in its direction.
The men have been taken away for questioning. According to the police spokesman, a number of similar cashpoint heists have taken place recently, notably in Bydgoszcz, central Poland, as well as in western regions of the country.
“The method of execution is the same in all cases. First they blow off the cover of the ATM, then they take the money from inside,” Sokolowski explained, adding that the men may be part of an organised criminal gang in western Europe. This is the first arrest of its kind made in Poland. (jb)
