• Komorowski pursues Napieralski’s support
  • 23.06.2010

Bronislaw Komorowski has invited Grzegorz Napieralski for talks on his possible support in the second round of the presidential election on July 4.

Grzegorz Napieralski received almost 14 percent of the vote in the first round last Sunday, which puts him in the potential ‘king maker’ position in the second round, when Komorowski will be in a head-to-head run off with Jaroslaw Kaczynski in two Sundays time.

“I would like to find out if Grzegorz Napieralski and his voters are not afraid of Jaroslaw Kaczynski coming to power,” said Komorowski, who won 41 percent support last Sunday to Kaczynski’s 36 percent.

Bronislaw Komorowski and his Civic Platform party were trying to woo voters of Napieralski’s Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) even before the first round of elections. For istance, former SLD prime minister Marek Belka was nominated by Komorowski as president of the National Bank of Poland.

“I always have known how to cooperate with politicians from the left. I never participated in witch hunts organized by [Kaczynski’s] Law and Justice party [during their time in government when they tried to banish anyone who had cooperated with the communist government before 1989 from public life]. As a president I will seek consent and reconciliation,” claims Komorowski.

The meeting between Komorowski and Napieralski is to take place on Wednesday or Thursday. (pg/mg)
