On Thursday, Jaroslaw Kaczynski is due to meet with deputy prime minister Waldemar Pawlak (right) in what could be exploratory talks on support in the second round of the presidential elections on July 4.

Law and Justice party spokesman Mariusz Blaszczak said the meeting between the two former prime ministers will occur after the National Security Council at the parliament building today.

"Jaroslaw Kaczynski will provide answers to questions that were formulated yesterday [by Pawlak’s party, the Polish Peasant’s Party (PSL)]” Blaszczak told the PAP news agency.

PSL’s Ewa Kierzkowska said she does not know any details of what will be discussed but that, "it is a very good thing that Kaczynski has treated our questions seriously."

On Wednesday, Pawlak said that he wanted to know what Kaczynski and his rival Bronislaw Komorowski’s views were on issues such as a reduction of taxes for people on low incomes and on support for farmers.

Pawlak sent written questions to both candidates and expects answers, in writing, by Friday.

The possibility of Pawlak - who is deputy prime minister and economy minister in the current ruling coalition with Komorowski’s party, Civic Platform - supporting Kaczynski is fraught with danger, however, as it could mean endangering the Polish Peasant’s Party’s position in the government.

Pawlak did unexpectedly badly in the first round of elections on Sunday, receiving just 1.8 percent support. (pg)
