• Government to wage war against smart drugs
  • 25.06.2010

The Polish government has decided to use fiscal authorities to launch an attack on smart drug shops.

In just one year the number of smart drug stores in Poland has increased dramatically –
from 44 to 500. In a bid to eliminate the trade of psychoactive substances tax inspectors will
thoroughly control shops selling smart drugs today.

The move is just a part of the government’s strategy, however. “We’re planning to introduce new regulations which will make it impossible to put new smart drugs on the market. I advise smart drug dealers to look for a new job,” said government spokesman Pawel Gras, adding that the draft bill is almost ready. “We won’t play cat and mouse anymore,” threatened the spokesman.

According to the new regulations the Health Ministry will have the right to withdraw a substance from the market for 18 months if it suspects that it might be harmful. Next, the substance will be tested in a laboratory and if it turns out to be harmful, smart drugs which contain it will have to be removed from shops.

Currently, seventeen substances are banned from the Polish drug market, including benzylpiperazine, whose effects are comparable to amphetamines. Smart drug dealers, however, circumvent the law by selling drugs under a different name. (mg/jb)
