Old age pensions, IVF, single-sex relationships, the Smolensk disaster, defence and foreign relations were the topics of a TV presidential debate between Bronislaw Komorowski and Jaroslaw Kaczynski last night ahead of the second round of the presidential elections on July 4.

The candidates in the hour-long television debate answered questions in three thematic blocks on: social, economic and foreign policy.

Before the debate almost 44 percent sample of Poles told the Homo Homini Institute opinion pollsters said they intended to watch the first one-on-one debate of the election campaign, although one-in-four said they would rather watch the World Cup match between Argentina and Mexico.

Political scientist Olgierd Annusewicz told Polish Radio that he though that neither candidate was a clear winner in the debate, saying that Kaczynski was fond of using jargon that would not connect with the audience and that Komorowski had apparently learned his answers by heart and seemed “artificial”.

A second debate will be held on June 30. (pg)
