• Radioactive elements found in Tatra mountains
  • 30.06.2010

Scientists from Krakow, southern Poland, have found traces of radioactive elements in the Tatra mountains, which form the border between Poland and Slovakia.

Both Radon and uranium were isolated by academics from the Laboratory of Radiometric Expertise, an institution of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The scientific research team, which comprises members from Poland, Hungary and Slovenia, are currently researching areas in Eastern Europe that were supposedly used by the Soviet Red Army, which performed tests for radioactivity and searched for uranium for the production of an atomic bomb.

Even though the scientists have found a presence of uranium in the Tatra mountains, they maintain that levels of the element are very insignificant.

A high of radon was noted in the Koscielisko Valley, an area popular with tourists. Academics say that the levels of the gas found there do not pose a threat to humans, however. (jb)
