Former chief of the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau, Mariusz Kamiński (left) will be charged with overstepping his authority and conducting an illegal operation that incorporated a bribe and counterfeiting documents.

The Prosecutors’ Office today informed that it had completed its official proceedings against Mariusz Kamiński and would be filing charges by the end of July.

Under Kamiński, the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau had become involved in an investigation of an alleged “land scandal” involving head of the Self-Defence party and then deputy prime minister Andrzej Lepper. Last year a court convicted two men for participation in the scandal, but as the judge did not query the legality of the operation against them, a second instance court has since lifted the sentence.

The land scandal, connected with the sale and development of choice land plots near the lake resort of Mrągowo, eventually led to the collapse of the ruling coalition and earlier parliamentary elections in Poland in 2007.

Kaminski was dismissed as head of Poland’s anti-corruption bureau in the wake of accusations his organisation had made against ministers and officials from the ruling Civic Platform, alleging they were involved in illegally lobbying for the gambling industry. PM Donald Tusk had accused Kaminski of using the bureau in the political interests of the opposition Law and Justice party. (ek/pg)
