The Minor Planet Centre at Harvard University has confirmed the discovery of a new body in the solar system, discovered by Polish school pupils.
Teenagers from a college in the town of Sierpc, central Poland, detected a main belt asteroid on 18 June. Their find was just given a stamp of approval by dr Patrick Miller, head of the International Astronomical Research Collaboration.
The pupils from Sierpc had earlier scrapped an asteroid from the “killer list” of solar bodies potentially threatening Earth when they proved it was not on a collision course with our globe.
The team, led by astronomy teacher Jozef Urbanski, comprises Aleksandra Kopycinska, Michal Lewandowski, Hubert Przygucki, Krzysztof Urbanski and Piotr Woznicki. (kk)
