• Komorowski promises to be president ‘for the whole nation’

Bronislaw Komorowski, who received a certificate from the National Election Commission today confirming his victory in Poland’s presidential election, has resigned his membership of Civic Platform, so he can become a president “for the whole nation”.

 

The election commission announced yesterday that Komorowski won the second round of the presidential election 53.01 percent to Jaroslaw Kaczynski 's 46.99 percent.

 

Komorowski said, Tuesday, that in resigning from Civic Platform - which is the senior partner in the current ruling coalition - is an act which is “a resignation from great power concentrated in one hand. I would like it to be a sign of my future presidency, which will stand above political parties and party lines.”

 

“My heart is with my political party,” Komorowski, who has also resigned his position as speaker of the lower house of parliamnent, “but my mind is already set on the whole country, far beyond party lines.”

 

“My goal is to introduce a presidency of national consensus which will try to fill the trenches dug by our difficult and painful history for the future welfare of Poland,” he added.

 

The president elect signed several bills into law today in connection with the aftermath of the floods with swept through Poland last month. A bill from June 24 dealt with providing assistance to farms and others businesses. He also signed bills on protection of historic monuments and their care and other draft laws. (pg/mg)
