A meeting, Tuesday, between Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Deputy PM Waldemar Pawlak “confirmed the stability” of the ruling coalition, said a spokesman, following signs of growing tension within the Civic Platform/Polish Peasant’s Party government.
The meeting of the leaders of the Civic Platform (PO) and Polish Peasant’s Party (PSL) comes after Pawlak complaining that he had been kept out of the loop on some decisions, including the recent appointment of Marek Belka to head Poland’s central bank.
Spokesman Pawel Graś said the two politicians discussed a plan going forward for the coalition government in the coming months. The talks took place before the meeting of the Council of Ministers at around lunchtime.
Pawlak, who leads the junior coalition partner, PSL, told Polish Radio yesterday that with the election of Civic Platform’s Bronilsaw Komorowski as president, the time is right to press ahead with much needed reforms, mentioning deregulation of the economy and simplification of starting up a business and reducing red tape.
Tusk and Pawlak also discussed the nomination of Grzegorz Schetyna (Civic Platform) as speaker of the lower house of parliament (Sejm) following Komorowski’s resignation from the post. Pawlak confirmed his party would support the nomination.
MPs are likely to vote on the nomination on Thursday. (pg)
